John Francis was born in 1901 in Wisconsin.[1][2] He was the son of Johannes van Iperen and Adriana Maria van der Burgt.
John Francis was the first child to be born in the family after they immigrated to the United States from the Netherlands[3][4] and settled in Little Chute, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin, United States, where John and his sons Walter and George worked as laborers on June 1 1905. The family (listed as either Eppuren or Eppeeren) lived in a house which they owned with a mortgage with seven children: Walter 18, George 16, Martin 13, Henry 12, Annie 9, Johny 4 and Gilbert 9/12th, the last two born in Wisconsin.[5]
In the 1910 United States Census on April 10 1910, the family (listed as Van Eperen) had seven children with the addition of Arthur, age 3. Gilbert (Gijsbert) was not listed as he had died.[6] In America, the family name became van Eperen (or Van Eperen or Vaneperen) presumably because the Dutch "I" sounded like the English "E".
On January 10 1920, John, age 53, was a living in Little Chute with his wife Mary, age 53, son George, age 28, who was widowed, George's son John, age 2 1/2, and sons John, age 18, and Arthur, age 12. George's son was listed as his parents' nephew in the census. John was working as a fireman in Combined Locks, Outagamie, Wisconsin.[7]
John Francis was 19 years old when he married Mary Mayme (DeBruin) van Eperen, 18 years old, on August 10 1920 in Little Chute, Outagamie, Wisconsin.[8]
On April 11 1930, John, age 28, and Mary, age 28, were living in a house they owned on Mill Street in Little Chute which was valued at $3,500. John was working as a laborer in a paper mill. They had two children: Earl, age 3, and Jerome, age 2, and a boarder, John's brother Mart van Eperen(Martinus (van Iperen) van Eperen), age 37, a laborer at a paper mill and a veteran of the World War.[9][10]
On May 3 1940, John, age 38, Mary, age 39, Earl, age 13, and Jerome, age 12, were living on 510 North Street on the South side of the highway in Little Chute. The house, which they owned, was valued at $2,800. John was working as a machine helper at a paper mill, earning $1990 in 1939.[11]
John registered for military service in World War II on February 16 1942 in Little Chute. He was working at the Kimberly Clark Company in Kimberly Outagamie, Wisconsin. He was 40 years old, 6' 1 1/2" and 205 lbs. with blue eyes, gray hair and ruddy complexion. He listed Mrs. Mary van Eperen, wife, as his contact, both were living at 142 McKinley Avenue in Little Chute.[12]
On April 7 1950, John F, age 48, and Mary A, age 53, were living at 905 N. Madison Street in Little Chute which was still valued at $2,500. Martin was working as a machine tender in a paper mill. Their son Jerome H, age 22, was living with them and working as a structural helper at a paper mill.[13]
He passed away on May 23 1973 in Little Chute at age 71[14][15] and was buried in St. John Cemetery there.[2]
Mary passed away five months later on October 24 1973 in Little Chute at age 71 and was buried in St. John Cemetery there.[16]
